Another Year – Infrared Bulb Supply Update
As we begin a new year, I’d like to provide an update on the current supply of infrared bulbs in the U.S.
As of early 2023, distributors are no longer able to import standard incandescent lamps. However, infrared heat lamps are exempt from this ban and remain available.
We continue to maintain a healthy inventory of bulbs for our customers. These bulbs are known for their durability, typically lasting 3 to 5+ years with normal use. Currently, we ship 250-watt bulbs from either Philips or Satco. Notably, Satco bulbs tend to run slightly hotter despite having the same wattage.
There has been increasing interest in higher-output bulbs. While we don’t recommend this for every situation, it’s important to understand the specifications if you’re using our Comfy Classic model. The timer on this unit is rated for 1800 watts. With four 250-watt bulbs, total usage is around 1000 watts. However, incandescent lamps draw more power at startup than during normal operation.
If you decide to switch to 300-watt bulbs, please note that this may reduce the timer’s lifespan due to higher startup loads. A workaround is to turn on only two bulbs using the switches, allow them to fully power up, and then turn on the remaining two. This staggered approach helps avoid exceeding the wattage threshold at startup.
